The Doolin Ferry Company is conscious of the fact that we operate within an area of natural beauty and environmental sensitivity. We are committed to operate within this area of The Burren, Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher with the utmost respect and in the most environmentally friendly way possible. We are dedicated to continuously monitor and measure our impact on our local environment and areas of operation. We will also instil in our employees, customers, and suppliers our dedication to create a more sustainable practice for our business.
We collaborate with all stakeholders to collectively develop the Geopark as a sustainable tourism destination. Our business works with local providers, businesses, and employees to encourage collective growth of sustainable heritage in our larger community.
A cared-for landscape
We actively participate in conserving our natural and cultural heritage. Our staff and crew are trained in the geology and ecology of the landscapes in which we operate. We in conjunction with Birdwatch Ireland and The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group have worked to identify and report particular species of birds and wildlife that are in our area of operation at sea. They are also trained to then share this knowledge with our on-board commentaries.
A well-understood heritage
We offer quality information and interpretation to communicate our stories and the unique character of our place to guests. Through our tourist information points, we provide and highlight information and literature on the local area and local providers with an environmental focus.
We work to ensure that tourism makes a positive social contribution so that it benefits our community as well as our guests. We are finding new ways to collaborate with other local businesses to offer locals and visitors with unique and fresh experiences each year.
We contribute to the local economy by maintaining and supporting local employment, by sourcing services and produce locally wherever possible, and by engaging with other businesses in promoting our region as a sustainable tourism destination. We encourage generational expert knowledge that is passed down by our crew.
Sustainable tourism management
We work to an Environmental Action Plan, which includes actions and targets for improvement that are reviewed annually. We have effective systems for monitoring and adequately managing our waste, water, wastewater, energy, travel impact and purchases. We encourage our customers to also use good practices while using our services, and to use other local members of the Burren Ecotourism network.
We are working hard to continuously asses our companies part in sustainable tourism development of our local community. It is our mission to make practical changes in our daily operations that contribute to environmental and cultural preservation of our heritage.
- Implement effective systems to monitor all areas where we can improve the impact on the local environment in which we operate.
- Promote on our vessels and premises a waste recycling policy through signage and waste segregation.
- Actively promote sustainable transportation options to and from The Burren, Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher Geopark region.
The Doolin Ferry Company is honoured to be working in co-operation with local businesses to develop sustainable practices to ensure economic, social and environmental benefits for local communities, visitors and The Burren, Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher area itself.
