Doolin Ferry Celebrates World Oceans Day 2018

Happy World Oceans Day to you!?

We`d love to hear how you will take action for the ocean today?

As a part of the Burren EcoTourism network we have come a long way over the past few years in taking steps to become a responsible business as we are privileged to sail on this amazing Atlantic Ocean to the Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher.  Compared to other businesses we already use very little plastics in our everyday running but here are three concrete steps that we have undertaken to play our part in helping to sustain our oceans magnificent beauty!

1. Maximize Our Doolin Ferry Sailing Times

Maximising fuel usage is the biggest contribution we can make as a business towards helping keep our business eco friendly.  We here at Doolin Ferry with Bill O’Brien were the first company to purchase a ferry that doubled our capacity from 100 persons to 200 persons.  This new ferry the ‘Doolin Express‘ has allowed us to carry more passengers on one trip- dramatically increasing our efficiency and cutting down on fuel usage.  Instead of having to operate two ferry’s to take the same amount of passengers to the Aran Islands now we can use one.  Along with increasing our capacity we also make our Sailing Times as efficient as possible.   We try to keep our sailing times restricted to a certain schedule so that we do not have cruises departing all day with small amounts of passengers- therefore wasting fuel.  If we keep our schedule trimmed to when we know we can have the most passengers on board we make LESS TRIPS with the right number of passengers therefore using LESS FUEL.  Each year we lead in continuing to perfect our ferry timetable and efficiency as an example for all.

2.  Green Purchasing

We have made a conscious effort to source environmentally friendly or sustainably produced products whenever possible.  Our paper and what small amount of plastics that we use are made from 100% recycled products produced from responsible sources here in the EU whenever possible.

3.  Minimize Paper Usage

As a business we are proud to have a mostly electronic reservations systems which allows us to save immensely on paper usage.  We encourage all of our guests to NOT PRINT out their online reservation and save it to a smart phone or mobile device instead and therefore #leavenotrace.

These are just three examples of the humble steps that Bill O’Brien’s Doolin Ferry takes on a daily basis that can overtime have a big impact on our environment and oceans.  We’d love to encourage you to find small steps that you can take that will go towards a much greater goal, keeping our beautiful oceans clean.

“Everyone needs to play a part. You can make a difference today – and every day — by doing simple things like carrying your own water bottle, coffee cup and shopping bags, recycling the plastic you buy, avoiding products that contain microplastics and volunteering for a local clean-up.”
— António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations
