The local landlord Cornelius O’Brien, a descendent of Brian Boru The High King of Ireland, lived in the wonderful O’Brien castle overlooking the wonderful views of the Cliffs of Moher.

The tower marks the highest point of the Cliffs of Moher and was built in 1835 by O’Brien himself. This beautiful tower was used as an observation tower for all the Victorian tourists that frequented the cliffs at the time. O’Brien saw the potential of tourism in these beautiful parts so cleverly built the tower to attract people from all over. The three story tower is built of grey stone and is situated in open surroundings. It has been fully restored after months of conservation work and is openly available to visit all year round. Visitors can use the tower’s top floor viewing platform to view such spectacles as the Twelve Bens mountain range, Galway Bay and Loop Head. Depending on the weather, you might also catch a glimpse of the spectacular Aran Islands! The bottom floor has a small artist’s gallery for local emerging talent and a gift shop for lovely souvenirs. There is a charge of €2 for adults and €1 for children to visit the upper levels of the tower, which is well worth it.

The tower is located just a short distance from the little village of Doolin, famous for its traditional music. Here it is just a short distance to Doolin Pier, where the charming small seaside village offers various organised trips to the Aran Islands. Doolin is situated 8km from the famous cliffs so it is easily accessible by car. Let us show you what this amazing coast has to offer on our Cliffs of Moher Cruise!
